Bavarian Nordic A/S is a fully integrated biotechnology company focused on the development, manufacturing and commercialization of cancer immunotherapies and vaccines for infectious global diseases such as Ebola, Rabies, and smallpox.
Most recently Bavarian Nordic have been working focused on producing a vaccine for COVID-19, which was backed up by the Danish Ministry of Health with funding to advance the development of a COVID-19 booster vaccine (Bavarian Nordic, 2021).
The company is headquartered in Kvistgaard, Denmark, with offices in Germany and the USA. Central strategic aim for Bavarian Nordic is to be a best-in-class vaccine manufacturer, with the continued progression of the development pipeline as especially strategic importance, as Bavarian Nordic continue to develop lifesaving vaccines.
As Bavarian Nordic continuously engages in a lot of new pipeline projects, there is an ongoing need to be able to see and prioritize the different projects in different periods of time – and across the project portfolio. Adding the complexity of having different divisions on top of this, all working globally, the need for a structured overview becomes immense. Especially in a fast-paced, high-risk market, where quick decisions are essential. Both from a business perspective and because of the impact of vaccines on public health matters.
In other words, Bavarian Nordic had identified the following needs for a PPM solution:
All of this with one common goal in mind: To ensure that senior management would be able to make decisions about the right projects, run at the right time, with the right objectives, and support of the overall business strategy.
When Bavarian Nordic reached out to Projectum with a request to help them set up a reliable and user-friendly PPM solution to manage and visualize their projects, portfolios, and resources, Projectum introduced Power PPM – the modern PPM solution built on the Microsoft Power Platform – as well as Team Planner, for resource and capacity management.
After a fast-paced scoping workshop was held, Projectum implemented Power PPM in just three months, including making portfolio reporting available in Microsoft Power BI.
“The fact that the Power PPM solution is built on the Microsoft Power Platform was a bonus, but our partnership with you – your approach, business, people, and the competencies – and just the way that you have built the entire system played a major impact in our choice,”
says Vibeke Kolbe, Senior Manager, Project Office at Bavarian Nordic and continued:
“We were really impressed by your approach to the project portfolio discipline and your ability to simplify the processes while being professional about it”,
Vibeke Kolbe adds.
With the overall vision in mind, Power PPM is now enabling Bavarian to create the desired structure and not least the necessary streamlined governance across the entire organization. This is achieved by providing end-to-end and top-to-bottom overview by browsing between the different levels of responsibility.
By collecting all data into the same platform and through real-time updates, Power PPM is now also providing the PMO with all the relevant reports, creating transparency. Senior Management is able to track the state of any given project and make decisions upon real-time data.
With more than 700 registered resources in their system, one of Bavarian’s ambitions with the implementation of Power PPM is to create a common resource management platform. So, with the integration of Team Planner, line managers and senior management will be able to keep an overview of all resources and how they are allocated across projects. This will improve the overall utilization of resources and in the end, create a more streamlined and efficient project execution and overall portfolio. “
All in all, we are much closer to our vision of working on the right projects, at the right time, and always achieving the right goals”,
Vibeke Kolbe says.
